All cats we rescue have ear mites & fleas, which have to be treated with Revolution and costs $9/per monthly dose. We have all the cats spayed and neutered, which costs anywhere from $10 - $120 per cat, depending on the circumstances and where we go.
If we're lucky, that's all we have to do. However, stray and feral cats often arrive with ailments that must be treated. For example, Punkin, an American Shorthair Tabby Mix had an infected puncture wound, and a fractured tooth. This cost $300 to treat. Cheeto, a buff Tabby Kitten arrived witha very bad case of ear mites, so bad his skin had lesions from scratching. He also had a high fever and was a filthy mess so that meant antibiotics, over night vet stay, and a professional groom.
For some reason most people who are looking to adopt a new cat or kitten not only don't want to spend much money, but expect a cat or kitten to be free. We're lucky to collect the $45 dollar adoption fee. As just outlined, the $45 dollars hardly covers medical costs, so of course this doesn't cover food, litter, bedding, cages, carriers, etc. So donations are being sought in the form of items we need since we do not have a non profit legal status to legally collect cash donations. We don't expect to make money rescuing feral and stray cats but we'd like to minimize personal investments.
Regarless of whether or not the city of Olmsted Falls, or your apartment manager, landlord, or condo management company, accepts that feral and stray cats are a problem worth investing in, understand IT IS AN ISSUE. To openly admit it's an issue means the aforementioned individuals, groups or organizations investing money, which they clearly don't want to do. But this work needs done whether people do the right thing and do it. No one likes their trash rifled through, cats living in their garages, under their cars etc.
